NEW DELHI: Government proposes to set up All India Institute of Medical Sciences-like institutions in Patna, Raipur, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Jodhpur and Rishikesh under the Pradhan Mantri Swastha Sureksha Yojna (PMSSY) within four years.

Thirteen existing medical institutions have also been identified for upgradation to the level of AIIMS, Health and Family Welfare Minister Anbumani Ramadoss said in a written reply to questions raised by media personalities Shobhana Bhartia and Vijay J Darda in Rajya Sabha.

He said AIIMS-like institutions are likely to be established within three or four years and these will greatly reduce the influx of patients coming from states outside Delhi to AIIMS for tertiary healthcare.

In reply to another query, he said a Committee under the chairmanship of M S Valiathan was constituted to study the functioning of AIIMS and make recommendations for further development of the institute.

The Committee has submitted its report which is under consideration of the government, Ramadoss said.

GDP: Government is committed to increasing expenditure in health sector from the current level of 0.9 per cent of GDP to 2-3 per cent of GDP over the next five years, Ramadoss said.

He said this would be done through the National Rural Health Mission to improve basic health care services for the common man.
