NEW DELHI: The government has decided to pay special attention towards secondary education, focusing on deprived sections.

The Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry in its recently released annual report said the government will pay special attention to the educationally backward, girls, disabled, children residing in rural areas and other marginalised sections like SC, ST, OBC and Educationally Backward Minorities (EBM) to provide access to secondary education.

New initiatives are being taken for better accessibility of secondary education during the 11th Five Year Plan. The government is bringing in schemes for universalisation of access to and improvement of quality of education at secondary stage (SUCCESS).

A national scholarship scheme is proposed to be implemented during the 11th Five Year Plan. In order to arrest the dropout ratio and encourage students to continue their education beyond class VIII, it is proposed to introduce a national Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme.

Selection for this scheme will be made through a national test from among students who have passed class VIII. Each student will be given Rs 6,000 per year for study in classes IX, X, XI & XII.

A revamped scheme of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in schools will be implemented in partnership with states and private providers.
