NEW DELHI: In a bid to improve the tertiary healthcare infrastructure across the country, the government on Thursday decided to upgrade 13 medical institutions in some states.

A meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh gave its approval for implementing the upgradation proposal under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana with a base cost of around Rs 1,560 crore.

Upgradation of 11 medical institutions one each in Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat and West Bengal and two existing institutions in Andhra Pradesh would be carried out, Finance Minister P Chidambaram said.

Besides, he said, Government Medical College in Srinagar would be upgraded and upgradation of one more institution in Uttar Pradesh would be identified.

"This would fill the gap in tertiary healthcare infrastructure as well as quality medical education in the under-served states," he said.

The government has decided to set up six AIIMS like institutions and along with the upgradation of 13 medical institutions, the total would go up to 19 institutions, Chidambaram said.
