Finishing schools to improvise employability

TIRUCHIRAPALLY: To increase the employability of engineering graduates, finishing schools will be set up at seven National Institutes of Technology (NIT), besides IIT-Roorkee.
The initiative was based on the reports collated by NASSCOM, which has predicted a shortfall of over 5 lakh employees for IT and ITeS sectors by the year 2010, NIT (Tiruchirapally) Director M Chidambaram told the media.
A pilot scheme would come up in months of May-June, he said adding that the scheme was supported by the Union Human Resources Development Ministry.
These finishing schools would focus on technical and soft skills with available infrastructure for 8-10 weeks during the summers.
The schools would be located at NITs in Trichy, Suratkal, Varankal, Jaipur, Durgapur, Kozhikode and Surushetra apart from IIT-Roorkee.
As per the study made by McKinsey Global Institute on behalf of NASSCOM, India produces about 3.6 lakh engineering graduates and more than 6 lakh Arts and Science Graduate every year.
As of now only 25 per cent and less of the engineering graduates and 10 per cent of non-engineering graduates are employable, the study said.
