Delhi not equipped to host international conventions: Jairam Ramesh

Ramesh, who represents Andhra Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha, insisted that there was "no bias" in choosing the venue

NEW DELHI: Hyderabad has been chosen as the venue for an international conference on biodiversity to be held next year as New Delhi does not have adequate facilities, Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh said today.

Ramesh, who represents Andhra Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha, insisted that there was "no bias" in choosing the venue as he made the announcement here.

The 11th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) will be held from October one to October 19 next year.

Ramesh said Hyderabad was selected after considering various factors including logistics like ability to host international conventions, transportation facility etc.

Major cities like commercial capital Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Bangalore were also considered but questions were raised on the logistics in these cities to host a big conference like COP, he said.

These big cities are "not equipped to deal with the COP," he said.

When it came to opt either national capital Delhi or Hyderabad, Ramesh said he opted the Andhra Pradesh capital as it has better logistics than Delhi.

"As Indians we should feel somewhat disappointed that the nation's capital does not have world class convention facilities," he said while making the announcement after launching the United Nations Decade on Biodiversity for Asia and Pacific at the one-day Stakeholders' Consultations.
