Centre to set up pharmaceutical institute in Bihar

The Union Government will set up a National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (Niper) in Bihar, Union Chemicals and Fertilizer Minister Ram Vilas Paswan announced here on Friday.

PATNA: The Union Government will set up a National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (Niper) in Bihar, Union Chemicals and Fertilizer Minister Ram Vilas Paswan announced here on Friday.

The institute, second of its kind in the country after Mohali in Punjab, would involve an expenditure of Rs 150 crore. The entire expenditure would be borne by the central government, he told a press conference.

Paswan said the main aim of the institute was to provide world-class education in pharmaceuticals and research facilites to the drug industry. Besides, the institute would offer Masters and PhD courses, he said.

The minister said the Bihar government would be approached to make available at least 100 acres of land for the institute.

After the amendment to the Patents Act in 2005, a large number of multi-national companies have evinced interest in setting up units in India, he said.

Paswan said similar institutes would also be set up in Kolkata, Ahmedabad and Hyderabad.
