CBSE issues three-language policy guidelines; big update for class 10 students

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) issued detailed guidelines for implementing the three-language policy on Monday, clarifying that students currently in Class X will not be affected by the new framework.

The board said students currently studying in Classes VII, VIII and IX will also not be required to appear for a board examination in a third language when they move to Class X. Those who have already opted for two foreign languages will be allowed to continue with the same, but will have to study one additional native Indian language (Bhartiya Bhasha).

CBSE added that grade-appropriate learning resources for the revised language framework will be made available in a time-bound manner. The board said the policy aims to make language learning meaningful, engaging and enriching, contributing to the holistic development of students.

Earlier on Friday, officials told PTI that the educatiom board will allow CBSE students currently studying in Classes 7 to 9 and who have opted for two foreign languages under the three-language policyto continue with the same language combination till Class 10.

The move is expected to provide major relief to the students.

The development comes nearly a month after CBSE announced that the study of three languages, including at least two native Indian languages, has been made compulsory for Class 9 students beginning July 1.

"The requirement of studying at least two Indian languages under the new language policy will be implemented prospectively from Class 6 and will not be applied retrospectively to students already studying in Classes 7 to 9," a senior board official told the news agency.

In May, the board had said that till the dedicated R3 textbooks are available, Class 9 students shall use the Class 6 R3 textbooks (2026-27 edition) of the chosen language.

According to the circular issued on May 15, CBSE students opting for a foreign language may do so only as the third language after studying two native Indian languages or as an additional fourth language.
