KOLKATA: The University of Calcutta (CU) and Strategic Global Management (India) Pvt Ltd, an affiliate of the KPC Group, have signed an MoU for a joint venture to establish a biotech park.
This Kolkata Biotech Park, an initiative which was announced some months ago, is set to come up on a 30-acre plot in Baruipur, owned by CU.
Addressing mediapersons, Prof Asis Kumar Banerjee, vice-chancellor, CU said, "The feasibility study for this biotech park has already been commissioned and we expect work to start after the monsoons."
The park would cover and promote diverse areas of biotechnology including bioinformatics, bio-imaging and drug development.
However, the immediate focus would be on setting up a Molecular Medicine Research Institute (MMRI), a 'Proteomic' facility which would help identification of diseases, a food processing and preservation technology development centre, a bioimaging centre, an agri-biotechnology unit and an environmental waste management unit.
Pharmaceutical companies from across India and abroad will be invited to set up their R&D facilities in this park which is expected to employ at least 450-500 scientists once it's complete. The initial investment for the park is around Rs 3 crore.
