Beyond the Ivy League: How students are using data to rethink global education

A growing number of students around the world are using data to decide where to study, looking beyond traditional student hubs and elite institutions. They are analysing outcomes like job placements, return on investment, and industry partnerships before choosing universities. This shift is changing how students and families approach higher education planning.

The changing mindset
Instead of focusing on university rankings and legacy, students are now asking: “What will I get out of this degree?” Platforms that offer data on graduate salaries, employment rates, tuition costs, and even debt loads are gaining popularity. This change is especially noticeable among international students who are funding their education with loans or savings.

"The days when getting into a top US or UK university was the only benchmark of success. Students today are looking beyond brand names. They want to know: What will I earn after this degree? Will I get a job? Can I settle down there? Aman Singh, Co-founder of GradRight said.

New tools and platforms
Several websites and apps have emerged that let students compare universities based on career outcomes. Several platforms offer dashboards that show salary averages by degree, immigration outcomes, and costs of living in different countries.

“People used to ask: How prestigious is the university? Now they ask: How soon will I get a job?” said Aman Singh.

The shift in destinations
As a result, students are choosing institutions and cities all across the globe. Countries that offer post-study work visas and transparent job data are seeing a rise in applications. Non-Ivy US public universities that offer strong STEM programs and industry tie-ups are also gaining favour.

Implications for universities
This trend is forcing universities to publish more transparent data. Some institutions are now releasing annual graduate outcome reports, salary trends, and employer feedback. Those that remain opaque are losing interest among data-driven applicants.

A long-term shift

"This trend will only grow stronger, especially as higher education becomes more expensive and competitive. With artificial intelligence tools also helping students compare options instantly, decisions based on emotion or prestige alone are becoming rare," adds GradRight co-founder Aman Singh.
