NEW DELHI: Automobile manufacturers have been asked to supplement the government’s efforts in setting up training schools in the country, reports Our Bureau.

Union minister of road transport TR Baalu has said that there is a lack of standardised institutions for drivers’ training owing to inadequacy of resources and auto companies should fill the gap.

Mr Baalu said that there is considerable scope for public-private partnership in training and skill upgradation of drivers.

While inaugurating the Driver Training School and Transport Management Institute in Noida, Mr Baalu said that the government is taking steps to establish at least one driver training school in each state. The ministry has set up 10 driving schools so far, and more and more schools are being added every year, he said.

The ministry has also taken up a two-day refresher training programme for drivers of heavy vehicles in a big way. 53,000 drivers will be trained in ’06-07, he added.

The government is also assisting around 120 NGOs to carry out the task of imparting basic literary skills along with driving skills, considering the fact that a large number of drivers come from disadvantaged backgrounds.
