AI is no longer a futuristic concept confined to research labs or technology companies. It is changing how businesses operate, how employees work and, increasingly, what employers expect from fresh graduates. As organisations integrate AI into software development, manufacturing, finance, healthcare, retail and logistics, the skills they seek are evolving much faster than traditional university curricula.
This shift is forcing parents and students to ask a new question. Instead of simply choosing the most recognised engineering college or branch, they now have to consider whether the degree will remain relevant in an AI-driven economy five or ten years from now.
Why the AI era is changing the college decision
India's AI ecosystem is expanding rapidly. Industry estimates suggest the country's AI market will grow several-fold over the coming years, while AI is expected to contribute significantly to economic growth. At the same time, employers across sectors are investing heavily in automation, intelligent systems and data-driven decision-making. The implications for students are becoming increasingly clear.
According to the World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025, nearly 40% of the skills required in the workforce are expected to change by 2030. While millions of new jobs will emerge, millions of existing roles are also expected to be transformed as businesses adopt AI technologies.
"The conversation around engineering education has fundamentally changed. Five years ago, parents primarily asked about college rankings and placement records. Today, they are asking whether the curriculum is aligned with AI, whether students will gain hands-on industry experience and whether the degree will remain relevant in a rapidly evolving job market. That shift reflects a broader understanding that employability now depends on continuous learning, not just earning a qualification," said Avinash Pandit, Cofounder – Zenith School of AI.
Placements are no longer just about coding
Campus placements remain one of the biggest factors influencing college admissions. However, recruiters are no longer evaluating graduates solely on programming knowledge or academic scores. Companies increasingly look for candidates who can work with AI tools, automate workflows, analyse data, understand business problems and develop practical technology solutions.
The rise of Global Capability Centres (GCCs) in India has accelerated this trend. Many multinational companies are building AI, cybersecurity, cloud computing and analytics teams in the country, creating demand for graduates who possess both technical expertise and practical problem-solving abilities.
Industry reports suggest employers are finding it increasingly difficult to hire candidates with AI-ready skills despite a growing number of engineering graduates entering the workforce every year.
"Artificial intelligence is no longer a niche specialisation reserved for computer science students. It is becoming a foundational capability across engineering disciplines—from electronics and mechanical engineering to healthcare and manufacturing. Students who combine strong engineering fundamentals with AI, business understanding and problem-solving skills will be far better positioned for the careers of the future," Avinash said.
What parents should look for before choosing a college
Choosing an engineering college today involves more than comparing rankings and placement brochures. Parents and students should evaluate whether the curriculum is updated regularly to reflect industry trends. They should also examine the quality of faculty, opportunities for internships, partnerships with technology companies, exposure to AI tools and the availability of multidisciplinary learning.
Industry engagement has become a key differentiator. Colleges that encourage students to work on real-world projects throughout the academic programme often help students build stronger portfolios before graduation.
According to Avinash, this is where institutions need to rethink engineering education. "The engineers graduating five years from now will enter a workplace where AI is embedded in almost every business function. Employers are looking beyond degrees and focusing on whether graduates can apply technology to solve real-world problems. Institutions therefore have a responsibility to move beyond classroom teaching and enable students to build AI solutions through continuous industry projects, mentorship and real-world deployments," Avinash said.
AI-first education is gaining momentum
The changing job market has also encouraged the emergence of institutions designed specifically around artificial intelligence rather than adding AI as another elective.
While every institution is adapting differently, the broader trend is clear: engineering education is becoming more interdisciplinary, with AI moving from an elective subject to a core capability.
Artificial intelligence is transforming the relationship between higher education and employment. College admissions are no longer driven only by institutional reputation, and placements are no longer guaranteed by a degree alone.
Families are beginning to recognise that future-ready education depends on a combination of strong engineering fundamentals, AI literacy, industry exposure and continuous skill development.
"Parents should no longer evaluate colleges only by placement statistics or legacy reputation. They should ask how frequently the curriculum is updated, how closely the institution works with industry and whether students are being prepared for jobs that may not even exist today. Future-ready education is ultimately measured by what students can build, adapt to and contribute in the workplace, not simply by the degree they earn," Avinash said.
As AI reshapes industries and creates entirely new career opportunities, the engineering graduates who thrive will be those prepared not only for today's jobs but also for the professions that are yet to emerge.
