Admission process back to square one, IIMs wait for HRD min
It now depends on how far back the IIMs would have to go in their admission process and how much time the government will take to clarify matters. Boss Management
There is also no clarity on whether IIMs, which are post-graduate institutions, could be brought under the purview of the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Act and are waiting for a clarifications from the Union Human Resources Development ministry. The admissions committee of all IIMs are expected to meet next week and co-ordinate the new date for the final list.
We do not know when we will be able to release the list. We will need clarity on issues like the creamy layer and might even have to call more candidates for interviews to fill the OBC quota. However, we will try our best to ensure that the academic year and the preparatory classes that start before the session begins are not delayed, said Pankaj Chandra, director, IIM-B.
Delay was the word from IIM-Calcutta, Ahmedabad and Lucknow. We will wait for the ministry of human resources to send us notification and then decide, said, Shekhar Chaudhuri, director, IIM Calcutta. IIM-A is waiting to see the Supreme Court order.

In case of the criteria, we are still to make a note of the procedures that have been laid down, added Samir Barua, director, IIM-A. We were ready with the final list, but after the decision it will take us sometime to revise the list. The new list will take at least 3-4 day more, said IIM-Lucknow director Devi Singh. IIMs had requested the government to apply the quota in a phased manner, rather than all at once. We are yet to see what is the final verdict, he said.
So, the final list for the fresh batches of the six IIMs will take a while in any case. It depends on how far back the IIMs would have to go in their admission process to source candidates and how much time the government will take to seek clarification on whether the IIMs are required to adhere to the reservation regime. Each IIM will now have to now rework admission lists to separate OBC students who qualify (that is, they are not creamy layer) to be considered under the quota.
The IIMs will also need to refer to an earlier shortlist from the 2007 academic session, forms required that students specify whether they belong to SC/ST or OBC category to select the rest of the OBC numbers for the quota, and a corresponding number for the general category. These students may have to go through admission processes, especially group discussion and interviews. Some institutions may find a shortage of candidates for the OBC quota from the non-creamy layer.
The IIMs will also have to deal with issues like additional infrastructure as the number of students will increase. Many have already taken steps. We have increased our batch size from 240 to 330 this year, said IIM-Ls Singh while IIM-Cs Chaudhuri added, The number of seats at IIM-C have been increased to 318. New hostel facilities should be ready in the next two months. The construction of new and bigger classrooms is in progress too.
So, for the hundreds of students waiting for the IIM admission lists, the suspense continues. Its almost deja vu, as lists were delayed last year as well. I was expecting the list to come on Friday, but now its delayed till next week. I hope it wont affect my admission in any way, said anxious IIM aspirant Aastha Sahdev.
