The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) said on Monday it has formed a dedicated group to recommend necessary steps to manage work-related stress and will also roll out a counselling help desk for accountancy professionals.

The move comes amid a raging debate about the work-life balance following the recent death of chartered accountant Anna Sebastian Perayil, allegedly due to extreme work pressure. Perayil was working with S R Batliboi, an EY entity.

In a statement, ICAI said it would develop peer support networks where members can share experiences, seek advice, and collaborate for stress management. It would also partner with industry players to promote ideal work models, including those around remote working and flexible hours, as well as roll out wellness programmes to help chartered accountants balance their professional and personal lives.

ICAI president Ranjeet Kumar Agarwal called on organisations to implement balanced work policies. "By prioritising the mental and physical well-being of their workforce, organizations can foster a more productive, resilient, and innovative environment," he added.

A special counselling help desk will also be set up, which can be reached through the institute's national call centre number (9997599975).
