CAG Vinod Rai elected UN external audit panel chief
Rai as chairman will oversee the audit of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), besides setting audit agenda for all UN specialized agencies such as the World Health Organization and others.
Rai as chairman will oversee the audit of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), besides setting audit agenda for all UN specialized agencies such as the World Health Organization , World Food Programme and the World Intellectual Property Organization.
The appointment could not have come at a more appropriate time when the Joint Parliamentary Committee , probing the 2G scam, has summoned the CAG to justify the Rs 1.76 lakh crore loss estimate he had projected in a recent audit report.
Like any other organization , the accounts and management operations of the UN, the specialized agencies (WHO, WFP, WIPO, others) and the IAEA are required to be audited and reported periodically by independent external auditors, who are supreme audit institutions of various countries selected by the United Nations. Rai will give direction to the external auditors and will have a final say in preparation of the reports before they are placed to the United Nations General Assembly.
The findings and recommendations of the panel auditors are taken seriously, and the reports are closely monitored for effective implementation .
Along with Rai, Jagbans Singh, director general in the office of CAG, has also been elected as the chairman of the UN’s technical group of the panel of external auditors . Much of the external auditors’ work is determined by the technical group that is mandated to set specific topics of interest to be taken up for audit.
