Solar powers non-fossil capacity past 300 GW
India’s non-fossil power capacity has crossed 300 GW, reaching 60% of its 500-GW target for 2030. Solar leads with 164.59 GW, while non-fossil sources now account for more than 54% of the country’s total installed generation capacity.
The capacity was 300.5 GW as of July 31. Solar accounted for 164.59 GW of this, followed by wind (58.14 GW) and large and small hydropower projects (57.24 GW). Bio power contributed 11.75 GW and nuclear, 8.78 GW to the total capacity.

Non-fossil sources now account for more than 54% of India's total installed generation capacity of about 552 GW. The pace of capacity addition has accelerated sharply in recent years.
India added 55.29 GW of non-fossil capacity in 2025 26, including 44.6 GW of solar and 6 GW of wind.
Solar has been the main driver of the shift, rising from just 2.8 GW in 2014 to 164.59 GW currently. Wind capacity has increased from 21 GW to 58.14 GW over this period.
The expansion is increasingly being accompanied by efforts to build domestic capacity to manufacture renewable power equipment like solar modules.
The capacity of manufacturers listed under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturer-s for solar modules has crossed 200 GW, compared with 2.3 GW in 2014.
The government has used the production-linked incentive scheme and domestic sourcing requirements to support the expansion of the solar manufacturing base.
