Renewable share rises; oil, gas import dependence increases: Report

India's renewable energy use has grown significantly. Its share in electricity generation reached 20.2% in FY25. Non-renewable sources now make up 79.8%. Despite this progress, coal remains the primary energy source. Energy demand is also rising, ...

India has made steady progress in expanding its renewable energy base, with its share in total electricity generation rising to 20.2% in FY25 from 14.2% in FY16, according to a government report released on Monday. Meanwhile, the share of non-renewables declined to 79.8% from 85.8% over the same period.

Over 70% of the country’s renewable energy potential is concentrated in six states, that is, Rajasthan (23.7%), Maharashtra (14.3%), Gujarat (9.1%), Andhra Pradesh (9.1%), Karnataka (8.6%) and Madhya Pradesh (8.1%).

“In order to maintain the sustainability of energy, tapping the renewable resources and investment on development of required infrastructure is the priority of the nation,” mentioned the report titled ‘Energy Statistics India 2026’ released by the ministry of statistics and programme implementation (MoSPI).

Reflecting this push, outstanding credit to the renewable energy sector has surged six times to Rs 10,325 during 2025 from Rs 1,688 crore during 2021.

At the same time, energy demand has increased, with per capita energy consumption rising 18.3% to 18,096 megajoule per person in FY25 from 15,296 megajoule per person in FY16.

Despite the growth in clean energy, coal continues to dominate India’s energy mix, accounting for the largest share in total energy supply.

Rising domestic demand has also led to higher import dependence. Crude oil import dependency increased to 89.4% in FY25 from 84.6% in FY16, while natural gas imports significantly rose to 49.7% from 39.9%.

In contrast, coal import dependency moderated to 23.5% in FY25 from 27.3% in FY16.

Overall, India’s energy import dependency rose to 40.6% in FY25 from 37.8% in FY16, underscoring the continued reliance on external sources.
