Reliance Power bags 500 MW battery energy storage contract

Reliance Power has secured a 500 MW battery storage contract through an e-reverse auction conducted by the Solar Energy Corporation of India. The project involves installing standalone BESS units on a build-own-operate model for 'On Demand' usage....

Reliance Power has won a contract to establish a 500 MW/1000 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) awarded by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), marking a significant entry into the renewable energy and storage sector.

The contract involves the installation of a total of 1000 MW/2000 MWh of standalone BESS units, awarded on a build, own, and operate (BOO) model for "on demand" usage under a tariff-based competitive bidding process.

Reliance Power’s bid was Rs 3.8199 lakh per MW per month. This represents a substantial reduction from previous BESS projects, marking a key moment in India's ongoing evolution of renewable energy.

The project will require Reliance Power to manage the system’s setup, including land identification, installation, securing approvals, and interconnection with the interstate transmission system (ISTS).

SECI’s latest auction reflects a significant 65% reduction in tariffs compared to its initial BESS tender which was priced at ₹10.83 lakh per MW per month.

The current tariffs also represent a 15% discount compared to Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited’s (GUVNL) Phase 2 rate of ₹4.49 lakh and are just 2% higher than the GUVNL Phase 3 tariff of ₹3.72 lakh. Once operational, this project will be one of the world's largest standalone energy storage systems.

Reliance Power's scrip ended at Rs 30.83, up 3.35% on the BSE, Monday.
