Ola Electric has received regulatory clearance to begin commercial rollout of its residential battery energy storage system, marking a key step in the company’s push beyond electric mobility into the clean energy space. Shares of Ola Electric Mobility Ltd were trading at ₹37.45, down ₹1.18, or 3.05%, at 2:06 pm IST.

The Bengaluru-based EV firm said on Friday that it has secured Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification for the Ola Shakti residential Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in its 6kW/9.1kWh configuration, powered by the company’s indigenously developed 4680 Bharat Cells.

With the certification in place, Ola Electric plans to begin deliveries of the 9.1kWh variant by the end of January 2026.

Ola claims the product is the country’s first residential BESS to be fully designed, engineered and manufactured in India.

As part of the certification process, the Ola Shakti system underwent a range of electrical and mechanical safety tests considered critical for residential energy storage.

These included evaluations for short-circuit and overload protection, fire and thermal safety, protection against electric shock, environmental stress resistance, sonic pressure hazards, and mechanical safety, in line with BIS standards.

Commenting on the development, an Ola Electric spokesperson said, “With the BIS certification of शक्ति 9.1kWh, we are ready to deliver our first residential BESS units. This is an important step in our journey as we reimagine how India will store and consume energy. Ola शक्ति brings dependable, affordable, and smart energy storage to homes, farms, and businesses across the country. More than a product, it is a cornerstone of India’s journey toward energy self-reliance and a future driven by clean, decentralised, and on-demand power.”

Ola Electric positions the product as an alternative to conventional lead-acid inverter systems and diesel generators. The company said the Ola Shakti offers automotive-grade safety, zero running and maintenance costs, and instant 0 millisecond changeover time during power outages.

It operates across an input voltage range of 170V to 270V, aimed at protecting household appliances from voltage fluctuations.

The battery pack is spill-proof and carries an IP67 rating, indicating protection against dust and water ingress, and has been tested for Indian environmental conditions, including monsoon exposure.

The Ola Shakti range is available in two configurations. The 3kW/5.2kWh version is priced at ₹1,49,999, while the 6kW/9.1kWh variant is priced at ₹2,49,999. The system is designed to power high-load appliances such as air conditioners, refrigerators, induction cooktops, farm pumps and communication equipment, with a claimed backup capacity of up to 1.5 hours at full load and fast charging capability.
