India is strengthening its position in the wind manufacturing industry and with its potential in equipment and generation it could become a global leader, renewable energy minister Pralhad Joshi said on Tuesday.

Addressing an industry event through a video message, he said, "I am confident with policy and potential we will take India to the next level and make it a global leader."

Secretary Santosh Kumar Sarangi said in his address at the event that the government is ready to work with the industry so that manufacturing takes off in a big way and the country not only becomes self-sufficient in wind turbines but also has the strength to export large volumes.

Last year, India exported around 3 GW of wind turbines but there is a potential to scale it up, said Girish Tanti, co-founder and vice chairman of Suzlon Group.

India's current wind equipment manufacturing facility is around 20 GW. As for the impact of the US tariff on India's green manufacturing sector, Sarangi said the exposure of wind turbines to the country is not very high so there will not be any major hit in this respect. Similar is the case with solar panels and cells, according to him.
