India eyes energy self-reliance as supply risks put renewable manufacturing in focus
India must prepare for energy supply disruptions by strengthening domestic renewable energy manufacturing, Union minister Pralhad Joshi said. The country is targeting 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by FY30 and 800 GW by FY35. The government is...
The minister, while addressing media at the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit & Expo, said India is on the path to achieve its target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel by FY30 and 800 GW by FY35. One of the key points discussed in the roundtable meetings with chief executives was reducing the dependence on supply chain in particular geographies, Secretary Santosh Kumar Sarangi said.
"If we are holding particular geographies on certain items, then there is a need for bringing self-reliance in manufacturing in those segments," Sarangi said.
India has seen an investment of around ₹7 lakh crore in the renewable energy sector since June 2024, the minister said. Joshi on Wednesday said India had received nearly $400 billion as investment commitment from investors during the summit that started November 2.
The renewable energy ministry is working on guidelines for recycling of renewable energy equipment waste. "A stakeholder consultation has been done, and a guideline formulation process is on right now." Sarangi said.
"We are trying to formulate the guidelines as quickly as possible. Because this also will have a mandate for the [equipment] manufacturers to make modules which have a much higher degree of recyclability."
