India became world's second largest solar market in 2025: Bhupender Yadav

India has emerged as the world's second-largest solar market, overtaking the United States in annual capacity additions in 2025, Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav said on Wednesday.

In a post on X, the minister stated, "This achievement reflects the nation's rapid clean energy growth, helping ensure efficient, reliable, and sustainable solar infrastructure."

While the country's solar capacity stood at 2.8 GW in 2014, it has crossed 155 GW as of today, an increase of 5,370 per cent, according to a video shared by Yadav on the social media platform along with his post.


The video also added that India has surpassed 50 per cent non-fossil installed capacity and met its nationally determined contributions (NDC), the non-binding, voluntary climate action plans that every country is obligated to decide upon and implement under the 2015 Paris Agreement, targets ahead of schedule.

Moreover, under the Prime Minister Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, more than 40 lakh houses are now powered by solar energy, the post added.
