India added 24.5 GW solar and 3.4 GW wind capacity in 2024, sets new records
India saw a substantial growth in renewable energy in 2024, adding 24.5 GW of solar and 3.4 GW of wind capacity. Key contributors were utility-scale and rooftop solar, driven by the PM Surya Ghar scheme, as well as significant wind installations i...
With these additions, India's total installed renewable energy (RE) capacity reached 209.44 GW as of December 2024. Solar energy accounts for 47% of the total RE capacity, making it the largest contributor among renewable sources.

Utility-Scale Solar:
India added 18.5 GW of new utility-scale solar capacity in 2024, a nearly 2.8x increase compared to 2023.
Top-performing states:
Rajasthan: 7.09 GW
Gujarat: 4.32 GW
Tamil Nadu: 1.73 GW
Rooftop Solar:
India installed 4.59 GW of new rooftop solar capacity in 2024, marking a 53% growth compared to 2023.
This surge is largely attributed to the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, launched earlier in the year. In just 10 months, the scheme facilitated 7 lakh rooftop solar installations nationwide.

Off-Grid Solar:
The off-grid solar segment added 1.48 GW in 2024, a staggering 197% increase compared to 2023.
Wind Energy:
The wind sector saw 3.4 GW of new capacity additions in 2024, a 21% rise from 2023.
Top-performing states:
Karnataka: 1,135 MW
Tamil Nadu: 980 MW
These three states accounted for 98% of the new wind capacity installed in 2024.
