Gentari supports India’s green hydrogen growth with strategic initiatives
On the sidelines of India Energy Week 2025, Sushil Purohit spoke about India’s renewable energy opportunity, what it must get right, and Gentari’s plans for the Asia-Pacific region.
Sushil Purohit, CEO of Gentari — the clean energy arm of Malaysian state-run oil and gas major, PETRONAS — expressed optimism about India’s energy transition targets, especially when it comes to green hydrogen. India aims to produce five million metric tonnes of green hydrogen per annum by 2030.
“India has abundant renewable energy, an integrated grid, progressive [energy] policy, and a talented and skilled workforce. It’s also strategically placed between Europe and East Asia, which are two major demand centres for sustainable energy,” he shared.

While India presents numerous opportunities, Sushil Purohit emphasises that a robust infrastructure and an efficient value chain are crucial for scaling hydrogen.
“Hydrogen presents significant opportunities in the clean energy market due to its potential to decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors. However, the cost of green hydrogen will remain a challenge unless we address the entire value chain. In the hydrogen sector, technologies like electrolysers are evolving, and while Gentari is collaborating with technology suppliers to ensure optimal efficiency and cost, it’s not just about the technology itself. It’s also about optimising renewable energy. For example, renewable energy accounts for 70% of the total cost. Achieving the right balance and sizing for solar and wind is crucial. Finally, once the hydrogen is produced, optimising shipping — an energy-intensive process — remains a key consideration,” Purohit explains.
As an integrated clean energy player, Gentari has secured 8 gigawatts (GW) of installed and under construction renewable energy capacity across its markets to date. This includes over 2 GW of renewable assets in the commercial and industrial (C&I) sector through its subsidiary, Amplus Solar. In Asia-Pacific, it is also advancing several key projects, including a hybrid solar and battery power plant in Australia, an offshore wind project with installed capacity exceeding 1 GW in Taiwan, and a large-scale floating solar initiative in Malaysia in collaboration with Sarawak Energy and the Emirati state-owned renewable energy giant, Masdar.
In the green mobility segment, Gentari continued to expand its portfolio with local and regional partners, currently operating 1,000 charging points (CPs) across the region, forming part of a growing cross-border roaming network of over 5,000 CPs spanning Malaysia, India, Thailand, and Singapore. In India, the company has partnered with the likes of Amazon India to deploy electric vehicles for its last-mile electric fleet programme. In 2024, the Gentari Go app was officially launched in India as an integrated, all-in-one customer experience platform, enabling users to seamlessly access clean energy offerings, from home solar to green mobility solutions.
“IEW provides an excellent platform to engage with like-minded partners and government stakeholders, while also offering insights into what's possible. This enables us to explore opportunities to contribute more of our own solutions,” Purohit concludes.
