Over half of India's renewable energy potential is concentrated in four states, official data showed.
Rajasthan leads with the largest share at 20.3%, followed by Maharashtra (11.8%), Gujarat (10.5%) and Karnataka (9.8%).
Among union territories, Jammu and Kashmir (including Ladakh) holds the highest share at 6%, as per the report titled 'Energy Statistics India 2025', released by the ministry of statistics and programme implementation (MoSPI) on Tuesday.
As of March 31, 2024, the total renewable power generation potential was estimated at 2,109,655 megawatts. Much of this potential comes from wind power (55%), followed by solar energy (36%), large hydropower (6%), small hydro power (1%) and other sources (2%). The 'others' category includes biomass, which consists of agricultural waste, forest residues and other organic matter, accounting for 1%, as well as cogeneration from bagasse (1%).
The report noted that "bagasse-based cogeneration is a highly efficient form of energy generation, especially in regions with a robust sugar industry".
