Delhi buses may run on garbage-produced hydrogen in future: Nitin Gadkari

New Delhi, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Monday that buses in Delhi could potentially run on hydrogen produced from segregated municipal waste in the future.

Speaking at a youth conclave organised by the Delhi BJP, he expressed his vision of a world where vehicles use water to generate hydrogen for their operation.

"People have asked how this will happen. Has there ever been a time in the last 50 years when something I predicted did not come to pass?" Gadkari stated.


The Union minister shared that 8 million tons of garbage from landfill sites in Delhi have already been utilised for the construction of expressways and revealed plans to eliminate garbage throughout the country by 2027.

"This (garbage) will be segregated and used to produce hydrogen through biodigesters. The buses in Delhi will run on it. All of this is possible," Gadkari said.

Additionally, he emphasised the economic potential of waste management, mentioning that the municipal corporation in his parliamentary constituency is earning approximately Rs 325 crore annually by selling treated wastewater.
