Cairn Oil & Gas has commenced sourcing renewable power for its operations in Rajasthan. The company has partnered with Serentica Renewables India Pvt. Ltd. to procure 25 MW of captive renewable hybrid energy.

The power will support Cairn’s operations in Barmer, home to India’s largest onshore oil-producing asset. Under the agreement, around 20% of the field’s total power requirement will now be met through renewable energy sources.

The companies have signed a Power Delivery Agreement, under which renewable power generated from a hybrid mix of solar and wind energy will be supplied from Serentica’s Gadag facility in Karnataka. The transition is expected to significantly cut Cairn’s operational carbon footprint, reducing emissions by nearly 115 kilotonnes of CO₂ equivalent annually—comparable to planting approximately 5.75 million trees each year.

Structured at a 70% Capacity Utilisation Factor (CUF), the 25 MW project is projected to deliver about 153 million units of renewable energy annually to the Mangala processing facility in Barmer. Alongside lowering emissions, the move will also help Cairn meet its Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) requirements.

For Cairn, the initiative aligns with its long-term sustainability roadmap, including its ambition to expand renewable energy usage and move towards net-zero carbon emissions. The company also aims to contribute up to 50% of India’s domestic oil and gas production, while reducing the carbon intensity of its operations.

The collaboration is being seen as a key milestone in India’s energy transition, highlighting how traditional energy players are increasingly adopting cleaner alternatives without compromising energy security.
