Videocon d2h to launch smart STBs

Direct-to-home (DTH) operator Videocon d2h is set to launch internet-enabled, high-definition set-top boxes (STBs).

MUMBAI: Direct-to-home (DTH) operator Videocon d2h is set to launch internet-enabled, high-definition set-top boxes (STBs). The announcement comes on the heels of Tata Sky's launch of a similar product which aims to convert existing LED television sets into smart TVs.

However, while Tata Sky will be upgrading its existing customers to the new STB free of cost, Videocon d2h will be charging a fee for the upgrade.

The new STB will allow consumers to browse content from Twitter, Facebook, Daily Motion, video-on-demand sites, OTT (over-the-top) apps, news and weather, among other platforms.

"This launch of gen-next HD smart set-top box demonstrates our expertise and innovation in creation, delivery and execution of technologically advanced products. We are enabling convergence of TV, DTH & internet all in one place,” Videocon d2h executive chairman Saurabh Dhoot said.

Chief executive Anil Khera said, “We aim to empower people with our connected set-top boxes. The customer benefits from an enriched viewing experience through a new user interface allowing seamless navigation. ”
