The government also decided to extend the sale of essential commodities like dhal, blackgram, palmolein, rava and maida through PDS shops till January 2008.

The sale of essential commodities through PDS outlets was started as a temporary measure in April 14, 2007 in Chennai and May 1, 2007 throughout the state to check their rising prices.
