Now, HITS policy likely by May-end

After missing the April 15 deadline that it had set for itself, ministry of Information & Broadcasting (I&B) is likely to notify the policy on headend-in-the-sky (HITS) by May-end.

NEW DELHI: After missing the April 15 deadline that it had set for itself, ministry of Information & Broadcasting (I&B) is likely to notify the policy on headend-in-the-sky (HITS) by May-end. On March 15, MIB secretary Asha Swarup said that the government would announce HITS policy in 30 days, but it���s yet to happen.

According to ministry sources, while MIB has finalised the policy, it is awaiting approval from the law ministry. The law ministry is expected to give nod to the policy by this month-end. HITS is a digital platform through which MSOs can deliver content to cable operators through satellites unlike the traditional cable route.

It helps cable operators to offer content in digital form as well as ensures that MSOs can reach out to larger population as well Citigroup-controlled You Telecom, Hinduja Ventures��� Incablenet and Jagjit Singh Kohli ���s Digicable are in fray for HITS licence. You Telecom is looking at launching HITS through its cable television subsidiary and has earmarked Rs 120 crore for investments in the first phase.
