1.58 lakh pirated movie discs recovered in six months
Chennai police has recovered nearly 1.58 lakh movie discs within a six-month period starting this January and arresting 141 persons for the crime.
However, the half yearly statistics for 2008 easily surpasses previous 'annual records', as only 199 persons had faced legal action last year, with the value of the total seizure of 1.69 lakh discs amounting to Rs 11.52 crore.
For the period ending till June 20, 2008, police have already seized 1.58 lakh pirated movie discs, valued at Rs 11.14 crore, a shade lesser than the recovery made throughout 2007, statistics of the Copyrights Violation Prevention division of the City Crime Branch (CCB) show.
The year 2006 proved to be a relatively `low performance' one for the defaulters, as the police managed to seize only 45,205 pirated discs, valued at Rs 1.16 crore.
While 161 persons were arrested in 2006, it went upto 199 in 2007 and 141 this year so far.
In a recent busting of such a network, police seized 125 copies of the recently released `Dasavatharam,' and 845 Cds and DVDs of the Vijay-starrer `Kuruvi', produced by Udhyanidhi Stalin, son of DMK's heir apparent, MK Stalin, among others.
Police put the estimate of the seizure at Rs 99.05 lakh, and have arrested 16 persons in this regard. The hub of activity revolves around Burma Bazaar at Broadway here, known for its kerb shops selling electronic goods and movie and songs DVDs and CDs.
Chennai Police Commissioner R Sekar has ordered intensifying raids against sale of pirated movie discs, sources said.
