MUMBAI: In what can be interpreted as yet another acknowledgement of India’s growing esteem and clout in the global advertising arena, Prasoon Joshi, executive chairman, McCann Erickson India and regional creative director, South & South East Asia, McCann, has been named as the president of the Outdoor jury for next year’s Cannes Lions advertising festival.
Mr Joshi is only the second Indian to head a jury at Cannes Lions — the first being Piyush Pandey, executive chairman & national creative director, O&M India, when he chaired the Film & Press juries in 2004.
Mr Joshi is also one of the very few Asians to preside over a Cannes jury.
While Mr Pandey had the honour of being the first Asian to feature in that select group, David Guerrero, chairman & chief creative officer of BBDO Guerrero Ortega of the Philippines headed the Radio jury this year. “It is always an honour to be part of Cannes,” said Mr Joshi, himself a winner of the prestigious Cannes Lion for campaigns for Coca-Cola and, more recently, Happydent. “I am among the few Asians to head this jury, so it is indeed a privilege.”
Speaking about his role as jury president, Mr Joshi said: “Cannes is truly international, so there will be diverse points of view from different parts of the world. So we need to do justice to each region’s cultural sensitivity. But ultimately, the work should be appealing, and there shouldn’t be a need to dissect the idea.
