Diagnosed with bone marrow cancer, Lisa vows to fight for life
37-year-old Canada-born Indian actor Lisa Ray, famous for her sizzling onscreen presence , wrote on her blog that she is fighting a rare bone marrow cancer.

MUMBAI: On Tuesday, 37-year-old Canada-born Indian actor Lisa Ray, famous for her sizzling onscreen presence , wrote on her blog that she is fighting a rare bone marrow cancer. Lisa was diagnosed with multiple myeloma earlier this year on June 23, and has already completed the first round of treatment.
The gutsy actor, however , refuses to cow down to her condition . A source close to the actor told TOI, ������ She is currently in Toronto to attend a 10-day film festival. But certainly she is not in the mood to talk about her illness. Whatever she wants people to know about her is on her blog.������
The actor, in fact, writes that she will do all she can to ������ wrench the spotlight on to myeloma and cancer awareness . I believe it can be cured. That���s the Dirty Realist in me.������
Lisa, daughter of a Bengali father and a Polish mother, was born in Canada. Once named among the ���50 Most Beautiful People��� by a Canadian magazine, she debuted in India as a model and went on to do a number of Telugu, Kannada and Tamil movies. She graduated to Hindi cinema with Vikram Bhatt���s ���Kasoor��� in 2001.
Lisa has since worked on several other Indian and international projects, including Indian-Canadian director Deepa Mehta���s controversial movie, ���Water��� . A favourite of Mehta, she has acted in her other productions ���Bollywood Hollywood��� and ���Cooking with Stella��� . She has just completed international projects such as ���Trader Games��� and ���Let the Game Begin��� . Her latest film, ���I Can���t Think Straight��� , is slated for release this week.
Her close friend and director of ���I Can���t Think Straight��� , Shamim Sharif, says Lisa is responding well to treatment and is very positive. ������ She is like family to me and I really would not want to divulge any more information on her.������
Director Vikram Bhatt, who directed Lisa in ���Kasoor��� , says, ������ I know she is a fighter and I have seen her fight her language problem during my film���s shoot. I remember that for her courtroom scene, which has a fivepage dialogue, she would get up at 4 am to learn her lines. So all I can say is if anyone can fight an illness like this, it has to be her.������

Lisa says instead of doing things like healing, she has been following a strict schedule of taking meetings, writing, signing contract and hearing scripts.
