Big FM to play only contemporary hits, junks retro
Taking a cue from the success of FM radio networks abroad, Big FM today launched a new format - '100 Chartbusters' - under which it will air only the top of the charts throughout the day and stop playing oldies.
Targeting the 12 to 29 age group, the list will comprise the most revisited songs by listeners and be refreshed every week.
The fidelity of the list will be determined by a thorough backend process using the popularity-gauging tools such as playouts of clips by TV and radio stations, ringtone downloads on mobile phones and album sales data from various stores.
"No more retro," said Sudha Sadanand, the programming head of the station.
"You will not hear songs from 'The Guide' or 'Aradhana' on our station. The playlist will range from mid-2004 till the hits of today," Sadanand told PTI.
"There will also be no more Western or international numbers," she added.
Top desi numbers will be played all day long, she said, interspersed with interludes giving zany twists to the day's hottest happenings - such as 'Todu Khabar' the breaking news.
