BHUBANESWAR: Former Under Secretary-General of the United Nations Shashi Tharoor has expressed interest to invest in Orissa.

Tharoor as the chairman of Afras Projects India Private Limited (APIPL) has proposed to set up India's first-ever wielded stainless steel and duplex pipe manufacturing facility at an investment of Rs 800 crore, according to official sources.

Tharoor met Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and industries minister B B Harichandan seeking 50 acres of land at the initial phase which could be increased to 125 acres subsequently.

He also made a presentation before the officials of the state-owned Industrial Promotion and Investment Corporation of Orissa Limited on the proposed project.

"We will see if we can contribute to the industrial development in Orissa," Tharoor told reporters not revealing the exact nature of his proposed project.

He said his proposal was in a 'very preliminary' stage. APIPL is the Indian arm of the Dubai-based multinational giant, said a senior official at the industries department. The company has proposed to introduce state-of-the-art technology from an established European technology provider.
