Tata Steel’s production up 4%

Between April-September 2006, the company produced 2.64 million tonnes of hot metal, which was 4% higher than last year .

KOLKATA: Tata Steel has registered a 4% rise in production of 2.6 million tonne in the first half of the current year. The company’s sales grew by 10% in the same period to 2.38 million tonnes.

Between April-September 2006, the company produced 2.64 million tonnes of hot metal, which was 4% higher than last year and crude steel production at 2.455 million tonnes was higher by 5%, as compared to the volumes in the first half of last year. Production of saleable steel production at 2.368 million tonnes registered an increase of 10%.

The increase in production volumes has been achieved despite shutdown of ‘E’ blast furnace, the smallest one at Jamshedpur, for relining and upgradation since last week of June this year. Post upgradation, rated capacity of the furnace is slated to go up from 1,050 tonnes per day to 1,350 tonnes per day and it is expected to be put in service in the second week of this month. The project is a precursor to more such upgradation jobs that would be taken up in other furnaces, the company said in a statement issued on Tuesday.

Tata Steel’s first half sales recorded a 12% increase at 2.298 million tonnes, against sales in the corresponding period last year. In particular, sales to the auto sector was up 31% to 0.41 million tonnes. Sale of branded rebars, Tata Tiscon, has registered a 35% increase in volume.

Tata Steel is undergoing a major restructuring of supply chain and the replenishment process. The objective of this initiative is to make the company’s supply chain reliable. It has already benefited distributors in terms of fewer material stock outs and lower inventories in their warehouses.
