Tata Steel to ramp up Jamshedpur plant capacity
However, irrespective of the outcome of the Corus deal, Tata Steel is determined to go ahead with its plans in India. This includes raising capacity at its mother plant in Jamshedpur from 4.8 to 10 million tonne by 2010.
While stoutly refusing to respond to queries on Corus, Tata Steel’s deputy managing director (steel), Mr T Mukherjee said: “We will go ahead will all our plans in India, irrespective of the outcome of the Corus deal.” He was speaking to media on sidelines of Metals 2006, an industry meet organised by Bengal Chamber of Commerce & Industry.
As part of this, Tata Steel is planning to complete expansion of the mother plant at Jamshedpur by 2007, almost a year ahead of schedule. A capacity expansion programme, now on at the plant, is slated to take it to 6.8 million tonne (mt). The expansion in capacity will be carried out without adding a single blast furnace. “The six existing furnaces will be enhanced so as to meet the new requirements,” Mr Mukherjee said.
“We are fully prepared to take up a further expansion at Jamshedpur to raise capacity to 10 mt. We expect to complete it by 2010,” Mr Mukherjee added. “By 2010, the product mix at Jamshedpur is likely to be 65:35 in favour of flats products,” he added.
A major part of the expansion from 7 to 10 million tonne will be in flat products. Some 2.4 mt of hot rolled products are being targeted by the company. In contrast, most of the investment now being carried out to raise production capacity from 4.8 to 6.8 mt is earmarked for long products that would mainly consist of construction-grade steel like angles, channels, bars and rods.
As a future strategy, Tata Steel is also eyeing a presence in long products in auto grade steel, a segment in which it is not. The company already make crankshafts for Tata Motors and bearing grade steel for Timken. This facility is likely to come up in some new location perhaps at the unit being planned at Chhatisgarh.
