Tata Steel to introduce new product for construction sector

Tata Steel plans to introduce 'Ground Granulated BF Slag' (GGBS), a new value added product for the construction industry.

KOLKATA: Tata Steel plans to introduce 'Ground Granulated BF Slag' (GGBS), a new value added product for the construction industry. The product promises to be a sustainable and cost effective material that will not only increase the compressive strength and durability of concrete but also reduce carbon foot-print significantly, Tata Steel said in a statement.

Trial supplies of GGBS have been planned to be started in a month's time. Based on the market response, full scale commercial launch is likely to be in next three months.

This product will be introduced in other major cities in eastern India like Kolkata, Ranchi, and Bhubaneswar. GGBS is blended with Ordinary Portland cement (OPC) in ratio ranging from 30:70 to 70:30 to make Ready-Mix Concrete (RMC). This cuts down the cement cost in concrete by around 30-40%. GGBS has been widely used in developed economies for a number of years. Of late, it is also getting used in major construction projects in India.
