Tata Steel gets $70-million order to supply high-speed rail track
Tata Steel said it has got a $70 million order to supply 84,000 tonnes rail for a new high-speed track connecting Bordeaux and Tours, two cities in France.
"Tata Steel will supply 84,000 tonnes high quality rail for the new South-Europe-Atlantique line, a 302 km long-line," the steel major said in a statement.
It said that the required steel for the project would be manufactured in Scunthorpe facility in the UK, before being rolled into rail at its Hayange mill in North-East France.
The delivery will start from 2014. The company will also supply switches and crossings to the construction consortium for the project, COSEA.
"We will be supplying rails each measuring 108 metres long. These longer rails give passengers a smoother ride and reduce maintenance costs," Gérard Glas, Head, Rail Sector, Tata Steel said.
