BHUBANESWAR: Tata Steel commissioned the first phase of its integrated steel plant at Kalinganagar steel plant on Wednesday, marking a milestone in Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik’s ambition of industrialising the state rapidly.

It is the largest single-location greenfield steel project in India, and would make flat, lighter, high-tensile strength steel, Tata Steel said in a statement.

The company said it started commission of the hot strip mill and coke oven, but blast furnace, sinter plant and steel smelting shop are yet to be completed.

Some people in the know said production of hot steel could take a few more months.
