Tata-Corus deal significant: Buddhadeb

The next meeting of CPIM secretariat, scheduled to be held on October 27, will discuss at length the CPI’s criticism of the government on Singur land acquisition and prepare a reply to it.

KOLKATA: “It is a very important and significant event and it will benefit the Indian industry”. That is how chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee reacted to news of Tata Steel’s bid for Corus being accepted and recommended to its shareholders by the Corus Group on Friday.

Ofcourse, 75 per cent of Corus shareholders must tender their shares for Tata Steel now to complete the transaction, but the chief minister seemed to have already accepted that as a fait accompli. Mr Ratan Tata has been a long standing friend of the chief minister, who made no attempt to hide his happiness over the Tata triumph.

The Left Front government is in very close touch with the Tatas incidentally over the more local issue of land for the company’s proposed peoples’ car plant at Singur. The CPIM state secretariat, which met on Friday at the party headquarters at Alimuddin Street, also dwelt upon the Singur land acquisition issue in the light of criticism by the CPI, one of the Front constituents.

The CPI has asked West Bengal commerce and industry minister Nirupam Sen to divulge the details of the agreement between the government and the Tata Motors over the small car project.

The next meeting of CPIM secretariat, scheduled to be held on October 27, will discuss at length the CPI’s criticism of the government on Singur land acquisition and prepare a reply to it.
