STEEL TITANS: Top 10 steelmakers in the world

The top10 steelmakers with annual production in millions of tonnes (MT).

The proposed takeover by Tata Steel of Corus Group would create a steel group ranking in the top half dozen in the world on the basis of production figures in 2005.

The two groups say that they would now form the fifth-biggest steelmaker, but data from the International Iron and Steel Institute places them in sixth position in terms of production volumes in 2005.

The institute ranks the 10 top steelmakers as follows, with annual production in millions of tonnes (MT).

1. Arcelor-Mittal (Luxembourg) 109.7 MT

2. Nippon Steel (Japan): 32 MT

3. Posco (South Korea) 30.5 MT

4. JFE (Japan) 29.9 MT

5. Baosteel (China) 22.7 MT

6. Corus Group (Britain/Netherlands) + Tata Steel (India) 22.6 MT

7. US Steel (United States): 19.3 MT

8. Nucor (US): 18.4 MT

9. Riva (Italy) 17.5 MT

10. ThyssenKrupp (Germany): 16.5 MT
