Steel industry should not fall prey to temptation: PM

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today advised the steel industry, particularly the private sector, not to fall prey to temptation and market manipulation due to excessive demand, while adopting a long-term view for the growth of the sector.

JAMSHEDPUR: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today advised the steel industry, particularly the private sector, not to fall prey to temptation and market manipulation due to excessive demand, while adopting a long-term view for the growth of the sector.

"The steel sector has immense potential for growth which will be hindered if any short-cuts were attempted for temporary gain," the Prime Minister said while attending the centenary celebrations of Tata Steel.

Describing Tata Steel as a unique symbol of India's modern industrialisation, Singh praised its achievements while releasing a special postage stamp marking 100 years of the company.

The Prime Minister pointed out that the agriculture sector has been on the decline for the last 24 years and farming could only be compensated through industrialisation. "The share of agriculture has not been increasing though the population is on the rise," he said.

However, industrialisation should not be taken up at the cost of displacement of people, Singh said, adding that those to be displaced had to be accommodated in the industrialisation process, which could generate employment and influence growth of other sectors.

"For that we are emphasising on education and modernisation of technical institutes to upgrade skill," he said.
