Steel consumption falls marginally to 11.69 MT in Apr-May

Steel consumption in the country fell by 0.8 per cent to 11.69 million tonnes (MT) during April-May 2013.

NEW DELHI: Steel consumption in the country fell by 0.8 per cent to 11.69 million tonnes (MT) during April-May 2013.

India had consumed 11.78 MT steel in the April-May period of the previous fiscal, according to data released by Joint Plant Committee, a body under the steel ministry.

Steel production during the period grew by 3.1 per cent to 13.03 MT, led by higher output by SAIL and Tata Steel.

India had produced 12.64 MT steel in the corresponding period of the last fiscal.

Major steel producers like SAIL, RINL and Tata Steel produced 3.3 MT steel during the period, up 8.5 per cent over the same period last fiscal.

Imports plunged by 41.2 per cent to around 890,000 tonnes during the period under review, from 1.52 MT a year ago.

Exports, on the other hand, grew by 28.4 per cent to about 840,000 tonnes.
