SAIL's IISCO steel plant takes first steps to make green steel

This follows the successful hot trial of second Convertor with ESP facility at BOF Shop by the SAIL chairman C S Verma on November 20.

KOLKATA: The casting of the first lot of 100 tonnes of billets as part of the trial runs at the soon-to-be-commissioned IISCO steel plant in Burnpur last week, marked the first instance of a unit under Steel Authority of India using Electro-Static Precipitator (ESP) facility to make environment friendly steel.

This follows the successful hot trial of second Convertor with ESP facility at BOF Shop by the SAIL chairman C S Verma on November 20.

“The successful trial has reinforced the confidence of everyone working towards stabilization of these facilities while maintaining strict process safety which in turn will help us take more Heats per day through two Convertors and two Casters,” said Sri I C Sahu, Executive Director (in charge) of IISCO Steel Plant, Burnpur.

The stabilization of these units is one of the pre-conditions for starting the most modern and the largest-in-India Blast Furnace expected to be blown in by the end of this month.

Other major facilities already completed at ISSCO Burnpur which is one of the leargets investments in West Bengal include, Raw Material Handling Systems, a seven meter tall Coke Oven Battery along with environment friendly dry quenching system, Sinter Plant, Wire Rod Mill and Power Plant.
