Steel Authority of India (SAIL) has posted a 6% rise in production of saleable steel to 9.3 million tonne (mt) during April-December 2006.
KOLKATA: Steel Authority of India (SAIL) has posted a 6% rise in production of saleable steel to 9.3 million tonne (mt) during April-December 2006.
The state-owned steel major achieved sales of 8.41 mt in the first nine months of the current fiscal 2006-07, which represents a 13% jump in sales recorded in the same period last year.
SAIL's highest-ever sales in the first nine months was contributed by an 8% increase in third quarter (Q3) sales during October-December 2006 to 3.01 mt in the domestic market. SAIL produced some 3.31 mt of saleable steel in third quarter (Q3) of the current year registering a 6% growth over same period last year, the company said in a statement issued on Wednesday.
Out of this, domestic sales accounted for 8.01 mt in the first nine months of 2006-07, a 13% growth over the corresponding period last year. At the same time, domestic sales in Q3 went up by 10.4% to 2.9 mt.
Production of value added items like rounds and bars, medium structural’s, HR coils and plates recorded a growth of 23%, 15%, 14% and 5% respectively during the April-December period.
"Four blast furnaces and a similar number of downstream facilities were taken own for capital repairs in the current financial year. These units are likely to produce over rated capacity in next fiscal. SAIL is thus preparing its production plan for 2007-08 keeping this in mind," the statement added.
