S Africa starts 'sunset review' of dumping duties on steel

South Africa's International Trade Administration Commission initiates a step called 'sunset review' towards the country's anti-dumping duties on steel.

NEW DELHI: South Africa's International Trade Administration Commission (ITAC) has initiated a step called 'sunset review' towards the country's anti-dumping duties on steel stranded wire, ropes and cables imported from India and China.

Following an application by a South African producer, ITAC has announced that it would review the anti-dumping duties on products originating in or being imported countries such as China and India, Steel Business Briefing (SBB) has reported.

Anti-dumping duties on steel wire rope in South Africa have been in force for five years but expired on August 28, and importers have 30 days from August 17 to make their representations to ITAC, SBB reported quoting an ITAC announcement.

South Africa is a major user of steel wire ropes for mining applications, many of which tend to be safety critical and of a higher specification and therefore higher value than standard "engineering" ropes.

All the countries affected by the duty have one or more major domestic producers specialising in mining rope production, it added.
