ROURKELA: With the commencement of operation of the country's largest blast furnace in Rourkela Steel Plant(RSP), the SAIL unit now occupies an important place in the country's steel industry, SAIL chairman said C S Verma said.

"RSP has many firsts to its credit and by having the biggest Blast Furnace of the country, it has added another feather to its cap," he told a gathering of employees recently.

"Although we have achieved great success with the commissioning of vital units, our biggest task is to bring the facilities to their full capacity utilization as early as possible," he said.

On the future expansion plans of SAIL as per Vision 2020, Verma said "We plan to achieve the overall figure of producing 50 MTPA of hot metal by the end of 13th five year plan. We have planned two phases of expansion for RSP, first raising its capacity to 7.5 MTPA and subsequently to 10 MTPA".
