Protests against POSCO project
Opposing the proposed project of South Korean steel major POSCO near Paradip, several organisations today staged rallies and demonstrations in the state capital.
The CPI state unit held a rally before submitting a memorandum to Governor Rameshwar Thakur, while at least eight mass organisations joined hands to vent their anger against the project.
They urged the Governor to immediately intervene in the matter as both the state and the central governments were "in favour" of the Korean company.
In its memorandum, the CPI urged Thakur to ask the state government to immediately begin an effective dialogue with the people facing displacement due to the proposed POSCO project.
"The government must withdraw force before initiating dialogue with the people who have been agitating for more than 22 months," said CPI state secretary Nityananda Pradhan.
He said though the chief minister had been saying that the government was for a humane approach to the POSCO issue, it had not started talking to the people living in the three gram panchayats who would be displaced due to the steel project.
Apprehending a "repeat of the Kalinganagar violence" in POSCO project area, the party demanded that it should withdraw force as this action had created a panic in the area.
"Congenial atmosphere for peaceful development of the area is very urgent," said Arun Jena, convenor of Odisha Jana Andolana Samanwaya Samiti, a body comprising several mass organisations.
