Orissa to review POSCO deal progress

Orissa government will review the progress of the Rs 52,000 crore POSCO steel project, the MoU for which was signed last year.

BHUBANESWAR: Orissa government will review the progress of the Rs 52,000 crore POSCO steel project, the MoU for which was signed last year.

"Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik will review the progress of the steel project on Wednesday. The discussion will basically focus on development on different fronts like land acquisition and new rehabilitation and resettlement policy," Orissa steel and mines Minister Padmanabha Behera told media here on Tuesday.

POSCO signed a MoU with Orissa government on June 22 last year to set up a mega steel plant with an investment of Rs 52,000 crore.

Behera said he and Steel and Mines secretary L N Gupta had reviewed the project on June 17.

The minister, however, ruled out any possibility of the government deciding on leasing iron ore mines to the South Korean steel major at the moment.

"Unless the Hoda committee, entrusted to give its recommendation on mining policy, does not come out with its report, the state government cannot take any decision,'' Behera said.

''Before taking a decision on the mining lease, the state government will examine all the letters of intent of POSCO to assess the volume of investment it has made on the ground''.

Official sources said that the conservator of forest had been asked to expedite the process of diversion of over 800 acre forest lands, which was part of 4,004 acres identified for the Rs 52,000 crore project.

POSCO review will precede the review of all other steel projects in the state on June 24, the minister said.
