Orissa govt to abide by SC directive on land for industries

The Orissa Government today said it was seriously examining a Supreme Court directive putting restriction on establishment of industries on fertile land.

BHUBANESWAR: The Orissa Government today said it was seriously examining a Supreme Court directive putting restriction on establishment of industries on fertile land.

This was stated by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik here while responding to Leader of Opposition JB Patnaik's demand for relocation of POSCO's proposed steel plant.

In a statement yesterday, J B Patnaik had sought shifting of the POSCO project saying that the proposed site was highly fertile. "The land demarcated for the plant site is known for betel cultivation, drumsticks and other vegetables," the Congress leader said, adding that according to the apex court's directive no industries should be set up on fertile land.

Responding to the Congress leader's statement, the Chief Minister said the state government would thoroughly examine the SC order and assured that it would not violate the directive.

When contacted, Orissa's Steel and Mines Minister Padmanabha Behera said the SC had categorically said fertile "private land" would not be used for industries.

Behera pointed out that the proposed POSCO plant was being demarcated on government land. "POSCO's plant site was on government land," he said.
